DataGrip alternative
DataTug is a data exploration tool for the sources a project opens, in a browser and from a terminal. SQL (Structured Query Language) is the language a database client sends to an engine. DataGrip is JetBrains' database IDE (integrated development environment), a desktop application for relational databases and NoSQL (not only SQL) databases. The command-line interface (CLI) is a terminal program. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an artificial intelligence (AI) application call tools. A web UI (user interface) is the page you open in a browser. TugQL is DataTug's query language for sources and joins. A foreign key is a column constraint that points at a key in another table.
DataGrip calls itself the JetBrains IDE for relational and NoSQL databases. The same page says it runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and that it is free for non-commercial use. The questions answered there say commercial use requires a subscription, and that a free 30-day trial is available. This page does not quote a price. The page also says "over 50" local and cloud databases. That is their count, not a measurement made here.
The query files page says a query file is a SQL or JavaScript file you can store in the IDE project and run against the associated data source. The data editor says foreign-key values are links, and Related Rows opens the related data for a selected cell. Virtual foreign keys are an IDE object, not a key defined in the database.
Where DataTug differs
| Question | DataGrip, from the pages above | DataTug |
|---|---|---|
| Free use | The product page says DataGrip is free for non-commercial use. Commercial use requires a subscription, and a free 30-day trial is available. This page does not quote a price. | The pricing page publishes a Free plan to explore, evaluate and use DataTug personally, with unlimited private and public projects. It says the CLI and terminal app are free for personal and for business use, within that plan's limits. |
| Join data across databases | Query files run against the associated data source. Related Rows follows foreign keys to related records. The pages cited here do not describe one client query that joins two engines. | Query multiple databases at once is a TugQL join in the CLI. PostgreSQL and MySQL are catalogue sources for that CLI. The browser join has its own status on that page. |
| MCP server | The product page says, "With the MCP server, you choose which tools are exposed to agents." It does not name the tools. This page will not invent a list. | DataTug's MCP for database page describes that database MCP server. It ships in the CLI as a local server. Its eight tools discover a project and run saved SQL. They do not include text-to-SQL or arbitrary SQL text. What is an MCP server defines the standard first. |
| CLI and browser | DataGrip is a desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The pages cited here do not describe a browser workspace or a datatug-style CLI. | Ways to use DataTug is the browser (the web UI), the terminal UI, and the CLI, with an agent as a third door. The SQL CLI tool page is that terminal database client. The DataTug CLI is open source under the Apache License 2.0, as the catalogue states. This page does not claim the web UI is open source. |
| AI answers you can check | The product page describes agents that receive schema context, with permissions and confirmation dialogs. It does not say whether generated SQL stays on screen. This page will not guess. | Saved SQL is what the MCP tools return before a run. A generated query you cannot check explains why the statement has to be on screen. The pricing page says AI works with your own key today, in the CLI and in the web app. Hosted question allowances on that page are planned, and are not built yet. |
| Git | The product page says you can use Git to version and share SQL scripts. Query files can live in the project directory. | The public demo project is a Git repository of query and board files. The knowledge graph page says what that model is still growing into. |
A fair stopping point
DataGrip's related rows and project query files are a real way to move from a row to a related row and keep SQL in the desktop IDE. Use them for that. A free DataGrip alternative on this page means DataTug when the question is a Free plan for personal projects, a web UI and a CLI, a cross-source TugQL join, or a local MCP server with a published tool list. DataTug vs DataGrip is that comparison. If you need the database list on their product page, use DataGrip for that list. DataTug's catalogue is shorter and states the limit next to each engine.
The compare hub keeps the wider landscape. The Chat2DB alternative and the DBeaver alternative are the other named pages. The live demo opens from the demo overview.
